The String Game - Making Skeins

If you have gathered some thread as part of your kit, it may have arrived as a ball, or on a cone. It will need to be prepared for scouring, mordanting, and dyeing.

Creating small skeins is the way to do this. You will need to secure all skeins with figure eight ties prior to any wet process. This includes any embroidery or Sashiko threads, with may come as a skein.

Well secured skeins will save you the heartache and bother of untangling a snarl ball later.

After dyeing your threads winding them onto sticks of cards is easily accomplished if you use a bowl, jar, or friend to hold the skein while you wind.

Making extra skeins that can be used for test dye baths is fun.
